Video from police officers’ body cameras show officers struggling with a suspect in a hospital emergency room when they discovered a handgun in the waistband of his pants, leading to a shooting that left the suspect dead.

Miles Jackson, 27, died in the incident Monday at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville. Jackson had been taken to the hospital by Westerville police when he was discovered passed out in his vehicle. Police said Jackson also had outstanding warrants for domestic violence.

Columbus police released the video Wednesday as the investigation into the shooting continues by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“BCI’s investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon at St. Ann’s Hospital remains ongoing,” Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement. “We can confirm through preliminary ballistic testing that the decedent had a gun and shots were fired.

“BCI continues to interview witnesses and complete further forensic analysis to determine all of the facts. Partial facts only provide partial truth.”

The Associated Press reports officers were searching Jackson in preparation for a custody exchange over the warrants. Jackson began to struggle with the two officers after one of them felt a gun, the video shows.

An officer can be seen using a stun gun on Jackson as they fall to the floor. Another offices tries to pull Jackson’s hands away from his waistband, but a shot is heard, reportedly from the gun in Jackson’s waistband.

The two officers took cover with guns drawn after the shot. The AP reports that the full video shows officers shouting for minutes at Jackson to raise his hands and put them on his head. An officer used a stun gun for a second time on Jackson, but another shot can be heard in the video. Officers then fired multiple shots at Jackson.

ABC 6 reports Columbus police officer officers Andrew Howe and Ryan Krichbaum, four hospital security officers, and Jackson were involved in the shooting. Howe and Krichbaum both have 15 years of experience with the department, ABC 6 reports.

WCMH Channel 4 reports two Westerville police officers, Eric Everhart and David Lammert, also were involved. Westerville Chief Charles Chandler says the officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Hospital workers tried to revive Jackson after the shooting but he was pronounced dead, reports say. There were no other injuries.

The shooting of Jackson, who is Black, has led to protests in Columbus. On Tuesday, a small group of protesters clashed with officers when they tried to get into police headquarters.
