A police officer fatally shot a man after he charged the officer with butcher knives Saturday, the Metro Nashville Police Department reported.

The deadly incident happened hours before advocates launched a 24 hour peace rally calling for an end to violence across the city.

Officer Christopher Royer, a four-year veteran on the force, fatally shot a man armed with two butcher knives after he charged Royer, MNPD said.

The man has not yet been identified. Royer was not injured.

The incident took place after a traffic stop in the city's Bordeaux neighborhood early Saturday morning in the 3200 block of Clarksville Pike near Summitt Avenue, police said.

MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said the officer was on routine patrol when he checked the license plate on a white Mercedes. The plate was registered to a green Chevrolet, so Royer initiated a traffic stop.

The driver was cooperative throughout the traffic stop and shooting, police said. However, a passenger in the Mercedes got out of the vehicle armed with two butcher knives and began running around.

MNPD released bodycam footage from the fatal shooting on Saturday. It shows the passenger of the Mercedes attempting to enter the driver's side front door of Royer's police car at one point, before continuing to run around.

Royer yelled for the man to drop the knives.

"I don't want to shoot you," the officer was heard yelling on the video footage. He also repeatedly requested backup.

Aaron said Royer backed 25 yards away from his police car as the passenger began running toward him. As the man approached, Royer appeared in the video footage to fire three shots. Then the man collapsed in the middle of Clarksville Pike.

He died after he was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Aaron said.
