Providence Police released body cam footage from an early morning arrest of a man possibly on drugs who later died.

Police responded to a report of a man screaming in the middle of Collyer St. in Providence while “possibly on drugs” at around 12:30 Friday morning, according to a report.

Upon arrival officers saw 34-year-old Joseph Ventre yelling and screaming in a grassy field.

When officers tried to talk to Ventre and ask him questions he paced back and forth and also rolled in the dirt. He also didn’t respond to any of their questions.

The Providence Fire Department was called for back up.

Police say that they attempted to place him in handcuffs to prevent any injuries to him or the rescue personnel.

Ventre didn’t comply with officers, but they managed to get him onto a stretcher after a minor struggle. Once he was on the stretcher rescue officials performed CPR.

He was then taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he died just after 1:40 a.m.

The RI Attorney General’s Office along with the RI State Police were notified and joined in on the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation and the PPD’s Office of Professional Responsibly will continue to review any additional Body Worn Camera footage.
