Three Louisville Metro police officers are being commended for rescuing two people from burning vehicles after a crash on Interstate 65, all of which was caught on body cameras.
The rescues happened after 5:30 a.m. Thursday on southbound I-65 between the Fern Valley and Outer Loop exits, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.
It all started out when a car that was already pulled over on the interstate was rear-ended by another driver. That set both vehicles on fire, police said.
The Louisville Metro officers were on the scene within minutes after they were notified of the crash, and it was when they arrived that they found both drivers unresponsive.
According to police, one of the drivers became responsive while one of the officers was there. The officers got the driver to respond and wake up, then free himself from under one of the cars.
Then the officer used an expandable baton to break the windshield of the other car and put on gloves to rip pieces of the windshield away, which helped create a hole that was big enough to pull the driver out.
According to police, both drivers were rescued by the police officers just minutes before an explosion.
Officials with the police department said the officers took immediate action to rescue the people, rescues that the officers were not trained for.
"They showed up and they knew what had to be done and they did it," said Lt. Jeff Lauder with the LMPD 7th Division.
The officers were identified by LMPD as Officer Clayton Kelly, Officer James Ashley and Officer Connor Maloney.
Officials said if it wasn't for the quick thinking of the officers, the two drivers would likely have not survived. The rescues happened while the officers were also coming off 11-hour shifts.
The two drivers were taken to a hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the officers were also taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The police officers have since been released from the hospital. One of them received stitches from pulling one of the drivers through the window.
