The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office released part of the body-cam video that shows a deputy shooting a man at a Queen Creek Walmart last week. It all started when investigators said 36-year-old Jacob Packard went into the megastore at Rittenhouse and Ocotillo roads on May 13 around 7:30 p.m. and claimed he had a bomb. About 150 employees and customers were evacuated from the store. Two MCSO deputies remained in the store to keep an eye on Packard but kept a safe distance from him.
While negotiating with him, Packard was told to lie on the floor on his stomach, which he did. But after some time, the body-cam video shows he got up and started running away from the deputies. That's when one of them shot him three times while he was running and then a fourth time while he was on the ground. Three more deputies went into the store and helped put Packard into handcuffs. He was taken to the hospital, where he remains. MCSO said deputies eventually confirmed he did not have a bomb. When Packard gets out of the hospital, he'll be booked on aggravated assault charges, MCSO said.
Witnesses tell us what they saw and heard. "He stated 'I have a bomb and I'm going to blow you guys up,'" said Walmart shopper, Lucas, who asked us not to use his last name. "We were in shock, and we look back and the guy is holding water bottles like he was pretending to have detonators."
Packard has a criminal history that includes assault, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing, false reporting, endangerment, dangerous drug possession and DUI, MCSO said. The deputy who shot Packard is on administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting, which is standard procedure. His name has not been released.
