New footage released by the Evansville Police Department on Wednesday captured a shocking scene that happened on Monday.

It all started Monday when Officer Jones was on routine patrol when he was flagged down by a man asking for a ride at the corner of Heidelbach Avenue at Diamond Avenue in Evansville.

According to EPD, the man had just been involved in a domestic dispute with 18-year-old Maeling Smith. While Officer Jones was speaking to the man, EPD says Smith pulled up at the scene in her car and began yelling, refusing to stay in her vehicle.

To gain control over the situation, Officer Jones tried to place Smith in custody - but EPD says that's when things got out of hand.

EPD says as Officer Jones was attempting to place Smith in handcuffs, she retreated to her vehicle with the officer still holding onto her, got inside, placed the vehicle in reverse, and accelerated.

After being dragged along the road, Officer Jones was able to free himself from the vehicle - though in doing so, the car ran over his right arm, according to EPD.

Despite those events, EPD says Officer Jones was still able to place Smith under arrest after she stopped the vehicle a short distance away.

Smith was arrested and charged with Battery against a Public Safety Official and Resisting Law Enforcement. She has since been released from the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $1,500 bond.

We're told Officer Jones has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
