Police released body camera footage Thursday that shows the aftermath of a crash they say was a result of a cicada flying into the driver's window.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of Riverside Drive.

According to officials with the Cincinnati Police Department, a cicada flew through an open window, striking the driver in the face.

That driver then drove off the roadway and crashed into a nearby pole.

Only minor injuries were reported, but the driver's car is totaled.

Body camera video posted to Twitter shows an officer approaching the driver after the crash, who told them he was driving when he believes a cicada flew in his window and smacked him in the face, causing him to swerve and crash into the nearby pole.

"I was driving and I'm guessing it was a cicada that flew in and smacked me right in the face. And when it happened, I reacted," the driver said.

The officer then approached several people who stopped after witnessing the crash. They said they didn't see the driver speeding or doing anything unusual prior to the crash.

"We're so glad this young man is OK. He has been a great sport about the whole thing," CPD said in a post on Twitter.

Cicadas are at or near their peak across the Cincinnati area, showing up in the billions with their at-times deafening, cacophonous mating song.

Brood X cicadas have emerged from their 17-year slumber below ground, showing up in the billions.
