Kentucky State Police have released body camera video, and more information, about the fatal shooting of a man by LMPD last week.

The shooting happened May 30 in the 3600 block of Georgetown Place.

LMPD said officers were alerted to a reported stolen vehicle in the area and attempted to pull over the driver. The suspects in the car then took off running, and one of them brandished a gun.

That suspect, identified as Ryan Bernal, 32, was shot by officers and died at the hospital.

On Tuesday, KSP, who has been handling the investigation, said critical interviews are now complete and released video from the two officers who fired their guns and their names.

The officers were identified as Brenton Woodford, on the force since June 2016, and Chase Barret, with the department since Feb. 2021.

Sgt. Bill Gregory, with KSP, describes what is shown in the video. He said Bernal pulled out a firearm and aimed it at Woodford's neck and face while backing away.

The video shows Woodford move toward Bernal for nearly 40 seconds, giving several loud, verbal commands for him to drop the weapon.

"Bernal disregards the instruction and raises the weapon and points it at officers," Gregory said.

Woodford then fires multiple rounds, and Bernal is then seen falling to the ground.

Barret also discharged his weapon, but its unclear if he struck Bernal as well.

KSP said the investigation remains open and is being handled by KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team. They could not provide a timeline on when it will be complete.
