A Palm Coast man is accused of carjacking a woman in her driveway Saturday night, attacking her, then stealing her car and racing recklessly through the city, officials said.

Part of the incident was captured on a doorbell camera.

The sheriff said it's a miracle no one was seriously hurt in the crime spree.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said a shirtless stranger showed up in the Palm Coast neighborhood, seen on surveillance video trying to start a car in someone's driveway. Officials said that stranger was later identified as Angelo Walsh, 38.

Deputies said when Walsh couldn't get that vehicle, he threw a hammer at a passing car.

When that vehicle kept going, deputies said Walsh noticed a 70-year-old woman pull into a nearby driveway, fighting for her keys.

Walsh is very familiar to local law enforcement, with a criminal history dating back to 2001.

"He just needs to go away to prison because obviously, he's not going to change his life, and we're fortunate he didn't injure anybody more seriously," Staly said.

Investigators said the carjacking victim was bruised up, but otherwise, OK. As the suspect took off in her car, he nearly slammed into a passing motorist, then raced across a lawn and into backyards.

Deputies said Walsh drove erratically through the community, on sidewalks, medians, in the wrong lanes, and finally came crashing into a tree in front of a motel.

Deputies said the suspect briefly ran on foot, but was quickly captured.

The suspect suffered minor crash-related injuries.

He was treated and cleared from the hospital, then booked into jail.

He is now in jail, being held without bond.
