The Phoenix Police Department on Monday released edited body-camera video of an officer shooting a man who reportedly was violating an order of protection by being his children’s Phoenix home about two weeks ago. The department also released a portion of the 911 call and Ring video from the home. According to police, 42-year-old Adan Carlos had been served with an order of protection against him about two weeks earlier.
The shooting happened early the evening of May 30 outside a home in a neighborhood near 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road. According to Sgt. Ann Justus, the first officer to arrive exchanged gunfire with Carlos. She said Carlos fired six shots. While the view of the body cam was blocked because of where the officer positioned himself, you can clearly hear the gunshots.
Video from another officer’s body camera shows Carlos pushing the gun away and the officers approaching him. Ring video from the homes shows the same things from another angle.
After officers cuffed Carlos and started to provide medical attention, they discovered a round of ammunition in his pocket, Justus said. You can hear one of the officers mention it in the body camera clip.
Justus said police later learned that one of the shots Carlos fired hit a house about half a mile from the scene. While there were people inside at the time, nobody was hurt.
Justus also said Carlos had been involved in an armed robbery shortly before the shooting and that he forced a person to drive him around as he held a gun on them. Once that person had dropped Carlos off near the home, he let them drive away.
Nobody else was injured in the confrontation, but Carlos is still in the hospital, police say.
The officer who shot Carlos is 26 years old and has been with the Phoenix Police Department for two years.
