San Antonio police released body camera footage Thursday of a deadly shootout between two men and an officer during a West Side traffic stop in April.

Alex Anthony Garcia, 25, and Sammie Joe Barbosa, 33, were killed in an April 16 shootout with officer Tyler John Sauvage during a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Pinn Road.

The body cam footage footage was uploaded to YouTube in both raw and narrated versions as part of the department’s body cam footage policy, which was updated in December.

The new policy requires the San Antonio Police Department to release critical incident videos within 60 days or provide an explanation as to why it will not be released.

In the footage, Sauvage can be seen walking up to the blue pickup and knocking on the window.

Barbosa is seen in the driver’s seat, shuffling through crumpled papers; Garcia is in the front passenger’s side.

“Hey, stop digging in your pocket, bro,” Sauvage tells Barbosa.

The video shows Sauvage asking Barbosa to take out the keys and place them on the roof of the pickup so he would not drive off. Barbosa placed the keys on his dashboard.

Sauvage then asks Barbosa for his identification. Barbosa is heard stumbling his words for a moment until Sauvage asks him to step out of the car because he smells marijuana.

“I did smoke earlier, but it’s the smell,” Barbosa said.

“Well, we’ll figure that out,” Sauvage said.

As Barbosa continues talking to Sauvage, Garcia is heard yelling “Give me it, Give me it!”

Moments later, gunfire erupts.

Sauvage was hit in the hand and radio, police said. He is seen pulling out his weapon to return fire while running away from the blue pickup as a second round of gunfire starts from the passenger side.

Police also provided dashcam footage from Sauvage’s patrol SUV starting with the moment gunfire begins. A shadowy figure in the passenger seat can be seen quickly aiming the gun at Sauvage, a split second before Sauvage draws his own gun and retreats.

The footage shows Sauvage’s hand bleeding as he runs for cover at the back of his patrol SUV. He then picks up his gun, which he had dropped while running.

He tries to fire back but his gun jams because of his bloodied hands, said Lt. Jesse Salame, the narrator of the video. Sauvage is seen shifting his grip and then starts firing.

Although firing from the vehicle appears to have stopped, Salame said Sauvage kept firing because he saw movement inside the vehicle and feared he would be shot at again.

After firing seven shots at the vehicle, Sauvage asks bystanders to call the police.

“Tell them my radio is down!” he shouts.

Both Garcia and Barbosa were pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman who was sitting in the pickup’s back seat was wounded by a shot, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated.

The video, released Thursday evening, is prefaced by police spokeswoman Mariah Medina warning of its graphic nature. To view the narrated footage, click here; the raw footage can be found here. It was released along with body camera footage of an unrelated officer-involved shooting.

The shooting remains under investigation, police said.
