2021 Cupra Formentor Hybrid
.............................
The production version of the Formentor hasn’t changed much from a pre-production concept that arrived in 2019. Its styling remains familiar, with sharp, sporty lines, large 19-inch wheels (hiding 18-inch Brembo brakes) and the now-ubiquitous Cupra copper-coloured trim. A range of metallic and matte paint finishes are offered alongside high-quality interior trims like brushed aluminium and leather.

Both trim levels feature 19-inch matte black or silver alloy wheels and sports bumpers, as well as folding and heated door mirrors, plus LED headlights and tail-lights. Interior features include sports pedals, ambient lighting, a 12-inch navigation system with phone integration and wireless phone charging, four USB-C sockets and three-zone climate control.

The VZ1 has black bucket seats paired with copper stitching, while the VZ2 adds power-adjustable and heated black Nappa leather bucket seats also featuring copper stitching, along with a heated sports steering wheel with stop-start and CUPRA driving mode buttons.

Like the Cupra Leon hot hatchback, the Formentor is powered by a choice of powertrains – plug-in hybrid or purely petrol. The most powerful petrol option uses the Volkswagen Group’s tried-and-tested 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 306bhp, while the entry-level, less powerful car gets a detuned version with 242bhp. Power goes to all four wheels via Cupra’s 4Drive system in the plug-in hybrid and more powerful petrol model, but the entry-level petrol car is front-wheel-drive only. he e-Hybrid plug-in uses a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 13kWh battery and electric-motor combination making up its plug-in hybrid element, with a quoted total output of 242bhp and 400Nm of torque. A DSG gearbox puts power to the road, but four-wheel drive isn’t offered here. A top speed of 130mph and a 0-60mph time of seven seconds are promised, along with pure-electric range of 32-34 miles. Official fuel economy is 177-188mpg while corresponding CO2 emissions are 33-35g/km.
