The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released bodycam footage on Thursday of a shooting last week by a deputy near an underpass at U.S. 60 and Loop 303 in Surprise.

At about 6:30 p.m. June 23, the deputy, who has not been identified, approached a vehicle crashed into a median on the freeway. The driver reportedly fired gunshots at the deputy, who exchanged gunfire, the Sheriff's Office said.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Michael Gerhart, was initially pronounced dead following a shot from the deputy. An autopsy, however, revealed Gerhart died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

The footage, which documents less than two minutes of the incident, shows the deputy exiting his truck with his handgun raised and approaching a crashed SUV from behind. The deputy tells Gerhart he has a gun and repeatedly instructs him to not move.

The deputy then directs Gerhart to exit the vehicle and to raise his hands. Gerhart, however, remains inside the vehicle yelling incoherently.

At one minute, three seconds, a gunshot is heard, and an impact mark appears on the back of the vehicle. The deputy returns three gunshots and runs behind his truck as he reports “shots fired” on his radio.

The footage then shows the deputy unload the magazine from his handgun and load a new one while remaining behind his vehicle.

The last 11 seconds of the video show slowed-down footage of the gunshot and the deputy preparing to return fire. This is followed by a circle around the impact mark and a caption noting that was caused by a bullet from Gerhart’s weapon.

The incident is still under investigation. The deputy involved is currently on administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office statement.
