The Bakersfield Police Department has released video of an officer involved shooting that left one man dead on June 13, 2021.

BPD said that "while this investigation has moved to a point where it is practical to release this information, the matter is still under review." And the involved officers remain on modified duty pending a determination by the Chief of Police as to the appropriateness of their actions under state law and department policy.

On June 13th at around 4:00 P.M., Bakersfield Police Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for vehicle code violations in the area of the 300 block Clifton Street.

The car fled and led officers on a short pursuit. As the car was fleeing the area, southbound on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, the suspect's car became involved in a traffic collision at the intersection with East Brundage Lane.

The car was disabled and the suspect, described as a Hispanic Male Adult, 25 -years old, exited and fired at officers arriving at that location. An officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect fled to a parking lot, located in the 1400 block Cottonwood Rd, where he attempted to steal a vehicle from a citizen at gunpoint.

Officers began converging on the suspect’s location and another officer-involved shooting occurred in which the suspect was struck and knocked to the ground. The suspect was still armed with a firearm; however, was making movements that he was attempting to commit suicide.

Using cover, officers attempted to verbally de-escalate the situation and have the suspect put the firearm down; however, the suspect refused and negotiations continued for several minutes.

The suspect refused to put the firearm down and another officer-involved shooting occurred where the suspect was struck multiple times.

Officers provided life-saving measures including placing a tourniquet on the suspect’s leg. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

A firearm was recovered from the suspect.

The suspect later succumbed to his injuries on June 16th, 2021, and was pronounced deceased.

The officers involved in the shooting are identified as Officer Travione Sherell, Officer Raymond Hackleman, Officer Jose Medrano, Senior Officer Paul Madriz, Senior Officer Eli Brown, and Sergeant Robert Robles

BPD said, "Officer Travione Sherell has been an officer with the department for approximately one year. Officer Raymond Hackleman has been an officer for approximately three years. Officer Jose Medrano has been an officer for two years. Senior Officer Paul Madriz has been an officer for approximately eight years. Senior Officer Eli Brown has been an officer for approximately fourteen years. Sergeant Robert Robles has been an officer for approximately sixteen years."

We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”
