A Jacksonville man shot and wounded by an officer Saturday night after shooting at police faces multiple charges stemming from the incident.
The Sheriff's Office has charged Tyrone Lorenzo Frazier, 24, with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, armed burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following the shooting at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Kings Park Drive.
Frazier, who was treated at a local hospital and released into police custody, remained jailed without bail on Sunday, Sheriff's Office inmate records showed.
No officers were injured in the 5:34 p.m. Saturday shooting, T.K. Waters, Sheriff’s Office chief of investigations, told news media reporters.
He said the officer who shot Frazier saw him walking through the Kings Ridge Apartment complex. The officer called out to Frazier — who also faces a felony domestic battery charge stemming from an arrest warrant issued for a separate February incident — then got out of his car and approached him intending to arrest him on the warrant, Waters said.
Frazier ran away and the officer chased him, Waters said.
"They went into a courtyard and the subject turned around and fired two shots at the police officer. The police officer continued the chase, taking cover as he could," Waters said.
Waters said the officer fired two bullets at Frazier as he tried to force his way into an apartment. One bullet hit Frazier, he said.
Waters said the officer who shot Frazier was placed on paid administrative leave according to Sheriff's Office procedures.
The Sheriff's Office didn't name the officer. And information about the officer's background also was withheld. Florida law enforcement agencies including the Sheriff's Office no longer release the names of officers involved in shootings.
Frazier was the sixth suspect shot by Jacksonville police so far this year. Three of those shootings were fatal, unofficial Times-Union records show.
Last year, Jacksonville police shot 14 suspects, including eight who died, while one person died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the records show.
Saturday's shooting is being investigated by the Sheriff's Office as well as the State Attorney's Office, which also is Sheriff's Office policy.
