The trial of Derek Chauvin, like so many trials of police officers accused of being too harsh in their enforcement, masks the root cause of the break down in civilian-police relations; the nature of the very laws police officers are employed to enforce. When the law itself comes into conflict with people trying to peacefully carry out their lives, conflict between police and innocent Americans becomes inevitable.
