An Oak Hill woman is accused of throwing a cat in a crate into the Intracoastal Waterway after a domestic dispute, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Stanley the cat was rescued and is OK.

Christa Anne Thistle, 53, was charged with animal cruelty, as well as simple assault. Deputies say she demanded to be taken to jail so she could make a phone call, bond out and kill her ex-boyfriend.

Thistle was impatient that her ex wasn’t moving out fast enough and began removing his belongings from an RV at the Riverwood Park Campground on Thursday evening, deputies said.

Then, she “picked up Stanley’s cat crate and threw him into the river,” the sheriff’s office said.

Stanley was underwater for about 20 seconds before the man was able to jump in and rescue the pet.

“Stanley was still wet and shivering when deputies arrived, and the boyfriend was wet from the waist down, consistent with jumping in the river to save him,” according to the department.

Thistle denied the allegations.

“Are you insane?” she asked just before she was handcuffed.

She was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where she remained Friday morning with no bond pending first appearance.

Volusia County Animal Services took custody of Stanley for follow-up evaluation and care.
