Seattle police shot and killed a man Tuesday night at Alaskan Way and Seneca Street, on the downtown waterfront. Police said the man was armed with a knife and moved toward officers.

Port of Seattle officers contacted the Seattle Police Department around 9:20 p.m. about a “man in crisis armed with a kitchen knife,” said Seattle police spokesperson Officer Valerie Carson.

When officers arrived, the man — who Carson said had cut himself — fled down Alaskan Way, police said.

They approached him and attempted to use less-lethal methods but their attempt was “ineffective,” according to Carson. She said she didn’t know what method was used.

The man then moved toward officers, she said, and police responded by shooting him. Two officers fired shots. They attempted lifesaving measures, but the man died at the scene, Carson said.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. The Office of Police Accountability, the Office of the Inspector General and the Seattle Police Force Investigation Team responded to the scene.

No other details, including information about the man who was shot, were available.
