Pineville police provided more details from a 2020 officer-involved shooting that seriously injured a man who they say was waving a gun along a busy stretch of road.

Police released a 911 call and officer body camera footage of the shooting that struck 23-year-old Timothy Rochell Caraway the morning of February 1, 2020.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. North Polk Street, off Interstate 485, near Arby’s.

Police said they want to be fully transparent about what happened, so they showed the officer police body camera video.

“We wanted to show that this process was fair and impartial,” Pineville police said.

Police said a passerby called officers after seeing a man waving a handgun.

“We just passed an African-American man pointing a gun,” the caller told dispatch. “He has long dreadlocks and a tan jacket. It was a handgun.”

On Monday, Pineville police showed body camera video from the officers involved, Adam Roberts and Jamon Griffin.

As officers approached, police say Caraway turned toward them and displayed actions believed to be of an imminent threat.

About 30 to 45 seconds in the body camera video, you hear a police officer say “shots fired.”

Two officers fired their weapons and struck Caraway, who was hospitalized in critical condition.

Twelve shots were fired at Caraway. Roberts fired three shots and Griffin fired nine shots.

Caraway was shot in the wrist, hand, neck and torso.

Police said, at first, Caraway complied and put this hands up, holding a black object, which turned out to be a phone. Then, police said Caraway reached down and pulled out a handgun.

“Officers see that as an imminent threat,” police said.

Roberts’ body camera footage shows him getting out of his patrol car, and then officers giving verbal commands before shots were fired.

“Get on the ground,” the officers say. “Put your hands up.”

Caraway is heard yelling, “Officer, I can’t, I can’t. I’m sorry, ya’ll said drop it. I’m sorry.”

Officers shot Caraway who was conscious as Roberts attempted to render treatment.

“I can’t feel anything,” Caraway can be heard saying. “I’m in pain. You shot me in the neck.”

Griffin said in his body camera footage, “all I saw was the gun.”

Police said the entire encounter took 28 seconds before Caraway was shot.

In the video, police say the scene is secure, and officers are communicating on the radio telling other officers to shutdown North Polk street in both directions.

Days later, Caraway was released from the hospital and served arrest warrants.

Caraway was charged with four felony counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, going armed to the terror of the public, carrying a concealed weapon, and resist, obstruct and delay law enforcement officers.

Roberts and Griffin were placed on administrative leave as a standard procedure but they were not criminally charged by the district attorney.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.
