How Good is Green Energy?

The government seems to be hell bent on ending the use of fossil fuels in favor of so called green energy. Currently the United States utilizes several sources of electrical power generation that are considered green energy, but how good are they?

The first thing we need to consider is how power generation efficiency is measured. A quick google search says that the efficiency percentage is found by dividing the output power in watts by the input power in watts (eeweb.com).

Based on that formula, how efficient are green energy sources compared to something like coal power? Apparently most coal power plants are operating at an efficiency rating of 33%. State of the art coal plants are supposed to be able to achieve up to 45% (ge.com 2018). By comparison, solar panels operate at an efficiency rating of 11 to 15% (solarbyempire.com 2021). Solar panels are expensive, have a terrible efficiency rating, and they don’t work if the sun isn’t shining.

Another “green” energy source is wind power. Wind turbines actually have a fantastic efficiency rating of 59% (energy.gov 2021). Unfortunately they rely on the wind, something we have no control over. They also have a tendency to kill wildlife.

So what about Nuclear power? Supposedly nuclear power has an efficiency rating of 33 to 37% (energy education.ca 2021). Its not quite as good according to the efficiency rating as coal or wind, but it is cheap. The fuel lasts a long time, and Im not sure I trust that efficiency rating. Anyone who has been to France knows the benefits of nuclear power, its cheap, and the sky is crystal clear. The one drawback is the dirty spent fuel, oh and the potential for catastrophic accidents.

There is a potential solution to all of this in the form of nuclear fusion reactors. Believe it or not the US Navy has a patent on a compact fusion reactor (Leman 2021). I think its time for them to share some of this technology with the rest of us. You could use every electrical appliance imaginable and your electric bill would be tiny. If we are going to move away from fossil fuels, I think this is the answer we really need.
