Do we even know what freedom is?

Last night I was listening to a podcast, and a guest was talking about how the American idea of freedom is not something universally applicable to other societies, and that is why it failed to take hold in Afghanistan. I took a moment to consider what he was saying, 20 years of building freedom crumbled almost instantly after all, but in the end rejected the idea.

It may be that our failure in Afghanistan comes from our own lack of understanding about what freedom actually is. Republicanism is not freedom, and neither is not wearing a hijab. Freedom, in the case of Afghanistan, would be the ability to practice muslim beliefs while allowing others not to.

I recognize that many societies are different, but I still believe that freedom is something universally applicable to all people.
