Second video today because I wasn't happy with the way I articulated my thoughts on freedom. We often think of freedom as self governance, or upward class mobility. While republicanism is a great safeguard of our freedoms, it is not the definition of freedom itself. At its core, a free people are responsible for their own actions. In the context of a place like Afghanistan, it would means that you wear a hijab or burka because you believe that is what you are supposed to do, not because the government will come punish you if you don't.

Somewhere along the line this concept of personal responsibility has been lost in our society. Too many people think they will be better off by passing the responsibility off onto a centralized authority (government). My Chinese grandparents can tell the horror story of what follows when you choose to take that path. Nobody is going to care about the needs of your family more than you. Take responsibility, and never relinquish your freedoms for a cheap promise of security that will only be broken.
