A Battle Creek man pulled a gun from his pocket and shot himself in the head, the same time an officer shot the man during a Wednesday afternoon pursuit, police said.

Police said 27-year-old Kamren Brown died of an apparent suicide during the Sept. 1, 2021 encounter with police.

Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker released body camera footage less than 24 hours after the shooting and named the officer involved during a news conference Thursday.

Blocker said the initial autopsy results show the officer's shot hit brown in the leg.

Police said the encountered started when officers responded to a report of a man banging a door with a gun on a South Street around 4:00 p.m. Sept. 1, 2021.

Police said a foot chase ensued and the shooting happened sixty one seconds after Officer Dilling responded.

Dilling, 22, was heard on video yelling at Brown to stop while he chased after him.

Brown did stop, he got on his knees and placed his hands over his head, the video showed.

“I want to help you, man,” Dilling said to Brown. “I got to figure out what’s going on.”

Brown had jumped a chain link fence, which separated him from the officer.

“Get your hand out of your pocket,” Dilling yelled with his gun aimed at Brown.

The officer, according to police, then holstered his firearm.

Dilling reached over the fence to grab the suspect’s right arm, according to the video.

The officer pulled on Brown’s right arm and told him to stand up.

The body camera video then appeared to show Brown pull a gun from his pocket with his left hand and point it at himself.

“He’s got a gun,” Dilling said as the body camera showed him moving away from Brown.

Two gun shots are heard on the video. The shooting was not shown on video as the body camera appeared to be covered by the officer’s arm at the time of the gunfire.

“He shot himself,” Dilling said.

Brown died at the scene.

A preliminary autopsy found bullet wound to Brown’s head and leg, according to police.

The semi-automatic handgun recovered at the scene had been reported stolen from Indiana, Blocker said. He added that there was a round in the chamber and five bullets in the magazine.

Brown had an extensive criminal history, according to police.

Battle Creek police responded to a report of a man with a gun in the area of South Avenue, Blocker said.

The 911 caller reported a man with a gun banging on her door.

"The suspect had on-going problems with the family. There's no direct relationship between the female and male suspect," Blocker said.

Dilling, the first officer on scene, arrived about eight minutes after the 911 call first came in and pursued Brown in his police cruiser for about 100 yards before Dilling got out and ran after the suspect, Blocker said.

About a minute later, Brown shot himself as the officer tried to take him into custody, according to police.

Michigan State Police and Battle Creek police are investigating the shooting while Dilling is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, Blocker said.

Blocker commended how the officer handled the situation.

"I'm not sure at 22 I could have handled that well. It was mature, professional and frankly there was signs of empathy," Blocker said.
