Video showing the moment a man was killed by San Antonio police during a standoff, after he had allegedly fired at relatives and a television crew, was released Friday.
The department released body camera footage from two officers involved in the standoff, as well as a 911 call of the incident.
On July 5, officers were alerted to a shooting at 11 a.m. in the 200 block of Noria Road.
In that incident, reporter Dillon Collier and photographer Josh Saunders, both with KSAT, were interviewing a family who had lost their home to a fire the day before.
Another relative, identified as Eduardo Amezquita, pulled out a gun and fired several rounds at the family and the TV crew, according to Lt. Michelle Ramos, a police spokeswoman who was the narrator of the video shared by police on YouTube.
In the frantic 911 call, a man can be heard telling police, “There’s a young man with two guns firing at reporters and just going crazy.”
The man told police he heard five shots, and that Amezquita had two pistols.
Amezquita, 28, then ran down the street to a home in the 300 block of Noria. A 911 caller said he attacked several people inside, but that they had been able to escape, Ramos said.
A SWAT team was called in and they surrounded the premises.
Footage of the standoff shows a negotiator talking to Amezquita.
By this point, Ramos said, police had been trying to get Amezquita to talk to them for four hours with little success so they had turned to a “taunting tactic” to elicit a response.
“Come on man, man up. Stop throwing a tantrum,” a negotiator said through a loudspeaker.
“I don’t know why you keep throwing a fit,” he continued. “Everyone’s worried about you, Edward. Stop throwing a tantrum.”
Video shows SWAT officers entering the home after Amezquita moved into the backyard. This portion of the body cam footage is blurred out, police said, because “privacy laws prohibit the department from showing the inside of an individuals home.”
Ramos said the SWAT officers attempted to contain Amezquita in the backyard by closing a back door.
Suddenly, an officer can be heard in the footage yelling, “He’s got a gun!” Gunfire is then heard.
Footage released from another officer’s body camera, who was standing outside by a fence, shows the moment an officer noticed Amezquita’s gun.
The officer says “gun, gun, gun,” to other officers nearby, and they can be seen shooting at a figure that then runs back into a storage shed, presumably Amezquita.
“Gun is out, gun is out. He has hold of a gun,” the officer radios, before the footage fades to black.
Amezquita was pronounced dead at the scene. Ramos said two firearms were recovered from Amezquita.
Ramos said two officers inside the home and three officers outside the home fired at Amezquita, killing him.
Officers inside the house told investigators they heard what they thought to be a gunshot and opened fire. The officers along the fence said they saw Amezquita aim toward the house, Ramos said.
Investigators have not yet determined who fired first.
San Antonio police released the body camera footage Friday in accordance with the department’s body worn camera procedure, which was updated in December.
Officials said the District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident.
