A report of shots fired on Indy’s south side resulted in an officer-involved shooting Friday night.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the officer-involved shooting happened Friday night in the 7700 block of Hackberry Court on the city’s south side. This is near the intersection of Madison Avenue and E Stop 11 Road.
“Our officers were dispatched to a report of an individual that had a firearm and was firing rounds off inside the complex,” said Kerry Buckner, IMPD’s Nightwatch Commander. “We had multiple calls from anywhere to two shots to nine shots being fired.”
Buckner said officers arrived to the Greentree Apartments around 8:30 p.m. and came across an adult male that matched the description given by callers and witnesses.
“He engaged that individual and asked him numerous times to drop the gun,” said Buckner. “While the officer was there asking him to drop the gun, the individual was firing shots, and was firing shots at the officer, which was indicated by his radio traffic.”
Buckner said once backup arrived on scene, officers continued to ask the man to drop his gun. Buckner said the suspect did not and when he raised his weapon again, he was subsequently shot.
Police say officers immediately began rendering aid to the man and he was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical but stable condition at last check.
“We don’t why he was acting the way he was acting,” Buckner said. “We actually know that he pointed a gun at a citizen, and it wasn’t like it was a personal thing.”
The IMPD said no officers were injured in the incident and there is no known threat to the community.
Police later issued the identities of the officers involved in the incident as Noel Gudat, a 19-year veteran; Daniel Beasley, a one year veteran and Kyle Runnels, a three year veteran.
IMPD said the on-duty supervisor immediately notified the department’s Critical Incident Response Team, who investigates police-action shootings, and and its internal affairs to run parallel investigations.
“And this incident will be reviewed by the Use of Force Review Board, and the officer will be put on administrative leave, which is pretty common in any shooting until an outcome is reached,” said Buckner.
Buckner said officers on the scene were checking for nearby security cameras to find out what led up to this shooting. He said the officers’ body-warn cameras will also be reviews.
“We had a lot of cooperation from the public, which is a good thing,” said Buckner. “They have our backs in this. They are the ones that called us here, to take care of their problem, and our brave men and women showed up and they ran towards the gunfire like we always do, and luckily for us no one was injured on IMPD, but unfortunately, someone had to be injured to stop this incident.”
