The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday released body camera video of a carjacking suspect who was shot after attempting to hit a deputy with a rock.

Investigators say the wild series of events started Sept. 6 when the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Darren Napolean Stone, assaulted his 72-year-old grandmother, fracturing her arm. Stone then stole her car and crashed it on Maple Glen Road, the sheriff’s office said.

About nine minutes after officers responded to the first call from the grandmother, a resident on Maple Glen Road told authorities that an elderly member of their household who had gone to check on someone who crashed their vehicle into a ditch was assaulted.

The video released by the sheriff’s office includes the 911 audio from the woman on Maple Glen Road.

The woman is heard yelling at dispatchers that Stone “is killing [her] husband,” and goes on to describe what led up to the attack, saying that her husband was attacked after witnessing Stone drive into a ditch.

From there, Stone was spotted on video attempting to open the locked front door of another home.

Security camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows Stone walking up to the front door and ringing the doorbell. When no one answers, he picks up a river rock from the side of the house and rings the doorbell again while trying to open the front door.

The sheriff’s office video then plays audio from the 911 call of the resident of that home, who was inside when the incident happened.

Stone is seen walking away from that home with the rock, and security camera footage from another home shows him trying to open their perimeter gate door shortly before a deputy pulls up.

Video released then cuts to body camera footage of the deputy involved.

The deputy is heard telling the suspect to stop and warning him that he will “get bit by [his] dog.” The deputy then tells the suspect to “put [his] hands up” before Stone lifts his arm with the rock in his hand and tries to strike the deputy.

Officials said the deputy was hit so hard that “the rock bounced and traveled several feet from the initial impact, causing him to become dazed and disoriented.”

Body camera footage then shows a struggle between Stone and the deputy before several shots are heard. Shortly after, Stone is seen on the ground while deputies point their firearms at him and giving commands.

The incident is shown from several cameras, including an officer’s dash cam and security footage from the home nearby.

Officials said Stone is well-known to regional law enforcement and will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges once he’s released by the hospital.

The officer who shot the suspect is an 11-year veteran who has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2010. He was taken to a medical center for treatment for a concussion and is expected to make a full recovery.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave according to the office’s policies and procedures.
