A reckless driver was fatally shot by L.A. County sheriff’s deputies during a pursuit in Norwalk, officials said Wednesday.

About 9:50 a.m., the driver was heading south on the 605 Freeway when he exited at Alondra Boulevard East, sheriff’s officials told KTLA.

At some point, deputies were alerted to a large Ford utility box truck that was driving erratically in the area. Deputies located the truck and tried to stop the driver, but he instead pulled out “an object that appeared to be a handgun,” officials said in an updated news release.

A shooting occurred, though it is unclear how many deputies fired their weapons.

The man, described as being in his 30s, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.

Officials recovered the object believed to be a gun, but it was confirmed not to be a firearm, officials said.

The box truck ended up on top of a divider at Alondra and Piuma Avenue, near the freeway off ramp, aerial video from Sky5 showed.

The off ramp was expected to be closed for hours amid the investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.
