A barricade situation Tuesday morning, led to a deadly police officer-involved shooting when an armed man started firing a gun multiple times out of an abandoned building in downtown Las Vegas. When the suspect pointed his firearm in the direction of officers, he was shot and killed.
The coroner’s office has identified the suspect that was killed in the officer-involved shooting as Trent Leach, 30. Leach’s place of residence is not yet known.
Assistant Sheriff Andrew Walsh held a news conference today at 3:30 p.m. to provide additional details of the Sept. 21 officer-involved shooting.
According to the coroner’s office, Trent’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death ruled a homicide.
Following an investigation, police say Trent fired twenty rounds from his firearm during the barricade incident.
If Leach survived, he would have been charged with:
* Battery with a deadly weapon
* Assaulting a public officer with a deadly weapon
* Resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon
* Discharging a firearm at or into a, occupied vehicle
* Discharging a firearm from at or into an occupied structure
According to Walsh, on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at approximately 9:23 a.m. the police dispatch center received a call from a citizen reporting two males in an argument and that one person had a gun on 11th Street off Lewis Avenue in the Downtown Las Vegas area, near Maryland Parkway.
The male with the handgun was later identified as Trent Leach, according to Walsh.
When officers arrived, they noticed a disturbance between two people in the alley near 11th Street. Police attempted to detain Leach, but he refused and ran away from the officers.
Police then followed the suspect to a nearby vacant building, where he refused to come out.
Metro surrounded the building and treated it as a barricade incident, attempting to make contact with Trent to deescalate the situation.
Shortly after SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived, a different male that had been sleeping in the vacant building came out confirming that Trent was inside armed with a handgun, according to Walsh.
Law enforcement attempted to communicate with Leach for several hours, to no avail.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the suspect pointed his firearm in the direction of officers prompting a SWAT officer to discharge his weapon, firing one round, striking the suspect, according to Walsh.
Walsh said SWAT officers approached the suspect to render aid, however, the suspect died at the scene.
No other citizens or officers were injured during this incident. However, bullets did hit nearby homes.
Neighbors coming home Tuesday evening say they want to see a change in their community.
“Being more responsible with guns. Not using guns for self-gain or intimidation factors,” said Ashley Phillips a resident in the area.
8 News Now spoke to a friend of the suspect’s family who saw the entire incident unfold.
“It’s kind of a sad situation,” expressed Tamanika Coates. “Basically, trying to get him out the house before they had the SWAT and everything, and I guess he wouldn’t surrender.”
The intersections at 11th St/Maryland Pkwy and Maryland Parkway/ Carson Avenue were blocked from traffic for several hours.
According to Metro Police, the officer involved in the shooting incident was Officer Zachary Adam. Officer Adam is 41 years old and has been employed with the LVMPD since 2006. He is assigned to the Homeland Security Division, Special Weapons and Tactics Bureau.
Officer Adam has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this incident, police say.
