Police identified a victim Wednesday, Sept. 1 in a deadly shooting that took place in Anaheim on Tuesday; as well as a man described as a suspect in the homicide who was shot and killed by responding officers.

A caller told dispatchers he had been shot at a home on the 2400 block of Greenleaf Avenue at 11:54 a.m., Anaheim Police Sgt. Shane Carringer said. Officers found signs of trouble when they arrived at the residence, and forced their way through one of its doors.

They searched the building and found Anaheim resident David Erickson, 61, wounded in one of its rooms, Carringer said. He said that moments later, officers were confronted by an armed man, later identified as 55-year-old Robert Nelson of Anaheim.

At least one officer opened fire and struck Nelson as police backed out of the building. A SWAT team was summoned to go back into the home, and they confirmed that both Erickson and Nelson had died of apparent gunshot wounds.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

Police on Wednesday declined to discus any possible motive for the shooting or prior relationship between the two men who died Tuesday. Public records indicate that they were neighbors on Greenleaf Avenue. Further details regarding what led police to shoot at Nelson were not immediately released.

Anaheim police are investigating Erickson’s death. Orange County District Attorney’s investigators are looking into the events leading up to Nelson’s death, which is standard procedure whenever police open fire while on duty.
