The Austin Police Department held a press briefing Friday afternoon to release more information and body camera video from a Downtown Austin officer-involved shooting earlier this month that left a 17-year-old dead.

The shooting happened Saturday, Oct. 9, at around 1:15 a.m.

A DWI investigation was being conducted near the intersection of East 6th Street and Sabine Street when officers heard multiple gunshots to the north. They ran towards the sound and found a group of men firing weapons at another group of people.

“Officer Vargas discharged his firearm once and it is unknown if anyone was struck by the officer’s discharged weapon," said Police Chief Joseph Chacon.

90 seconds later, APD's Counter Assault Strike Team Rescue Task Force found 17-year-old Michael Carothers with a gunshot wound.

“He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, but ultimately he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 5:45 am,” Chief Chacon said.

After the shooting, the group of men ran northbound, with officers going after them.

“Officers located and detained one individual that appeared to be involved in the incident and they also recovered one handgun,” Chief Chacon said.
