A Liberty County deputy is being celebrated as a hero after saving a man who collapsed outside the courthouse.

Liberty County Courthouse Security Officer Gary Eason was just starting his shift before 8 a.m. last Tuesday when a woman alerted him that an elderly man was laying on his back at the foot of the courthouse steps.

That man was Ralph Robinson. He had no pulse and he wasn't breathing.

Eason jumped into action, performing CPR on the man for about 2 minutes until the man's heart began beating again.

The first thing the man said to Eason as he slowly began to regain consciousness was “Thank you!”

The man was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah where he is now recovering.

Eason said this was the first time in his 24-year law enforcement career where he brought anyone back from the brink of death.

He says he is in contact with the man and is checking on his property to ensure it's safe until he returns home.

Eason visited the man in the hospital this past weekend, when the man told Easton that he received a pacemaker so the security officer wouldn't have to save him again.
