On November 13, 2021, Deputy Hernandez-Ortega was on routine patrol in the area of SE 92nd Loop and U.S. Highway 441, when he observed a Lincoln sedan with a South Carolina tag.

The vehicle was reported stolen so Deputy Hernandez-Ortega attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the stolen vehicle, Charles Poland (DOB: 12/01/1991), failed to stop and fled from Deputy Hernandez-Ortega at a high rate of speed.

Deputy Hernandez-Ortega initiated a pursuit. Poland fled westbound on Highway 484 to Marion Oaks Boulevard and then onto Marion Oaks Trail where Deputy Marton successfully deployed stop sticks to disable the tires on the stolen vehicle.

Deputy Hernandez-Ortega then attempted to perform a P.I.T. maneuver, but Poland slammed on his brakes and then rammed Deputy Hernandez-Ortega’s patrol vehicle, and then resumed his flight. Deputy Hernandez-Ortega continued to pursue until he was able to perform a successful P.I.T. maneuver, causing the stolen vehicle to come to a stop.

At that time, Poland exited the vehicle and fled on foot. After a short foot chase, Poland was apprehended and taken into custody.

Poland was arrested for Fleeing and Eluding, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting without Violence, and Driving with a Suspended License. He is currently held at the Marion County Jail without bond.
