The trauma of losing a spouse is impactful enough without the financial implications. But when finances are impacted, a surviving spouse, widow or widower, will likely be eligible for survivor/widow benefits either immediately or in the future. Some don't realize that this may be at 50 or 60 years old, or even earlier, and they fail to file for such benefits. Learn some basics here, so if you find yourself in this boat, you know you have oars to keep afloat.
