With the trial of Officer Derek Chauvin underway, the chant “Black Lives Matter” is once again entering the public consciousnesses. Floyd’s death will continue to be a metaphor for the supposed ills African-Americans face by virtue of their race, in both society and elsewhere. Mr. Watson, however, preempts the phrase “Black Lives Matter” by explaining, clearly and precisely, what the term’s most egregious effects are. Indeed, Mr. Watson is clear that BLM’s value statement distracts from a key principle—that our lives matter on a fundamental level. He explains how recognizing this mindset can help any and all Americans deal with the impending racial strife.
