Frederick police officer receives Chief’s Commendation after exceptional efforts to car crash

An officer of the Frederick Police Department was awarded a Chief’s Commendation on Nov. 10 for praiseworthy efforts in response to a vehicle crash in July.

Officer Shawna Paintin was given special recognition after the Frederick Police Department’s Chief of Police Todd Norris became impressed with her service during a difficult time, according to a Town of Frederick news release. After reviewing body camera footage of the crash, Norris was notified of Paintin’s competent, calm and compassionate performance in a challenging setting.

At 1:28 a.m. July 31, Paintin was dispatched to assist the Colorado State Patrol with a traffic accident on Interstate 25 north of Colo. 52. As the first officer to arrive on the scene, Paintin quickly identified and provided comfort to several victims who needed medical attention.

On top of that, Paitin found a trapped woman with her leg pinned between her vehicle and the center guard rail. She alerted responding units additional resources were needed for the victim’s injuries.

Paintin’s quick decision-making and actions resulted in her organizing a group of bystanders and other responding officers to assist in pushing the vehicle away from the rail to free the pinned woman, according to the release.

Paintin’s exemplary work during a high-stress situation prior to the arrival of fire personnel and Emergency Medical Services was commended by Norris.

“Throughout this incident, Officer Paintin displayed exceptional professionalism by managing a chaotic scene, orchestrating the effort to free the trapped victim and providing comfort to the young drivers and passengers involved,” Norris said. “Her actions that night display the values we uphold as our highest standards. Her dedication was apparent as she treated everyone like family, with respect.”
