On October 6, 2020, at about 11:15 am, a deputy assigned to Lakewood Sheriff’s Station handled a vandalism report, where a Male Hispanic broke the windshield of a local television news van with a shovel, while a reporter sat inside. The news crew had been covering the story about a murder which had occurred near the 710 Freeway and Rosecrans Avenue, when the suspect smashed the windshield of the news van, without warning or provocation. The camera crew filmed the male, who appeared to be a transient, as he left the scene of the vandalism. That video was shown to the deputy, who documented the crime.

Less than an hour later, the same deputy encountered 34-year-old Hermes Aparicio, walking near Rosecrans Avenue and Garfield Avenue, and recognized him as the male from the vandalism incident. When the deputy attempted to contact Aparacio, he initially attempted to avoid the deputy, before walking directly toward the deputy’s driver side door. As the deputy stepped out of his patrol car, Aparicio threw an oxidized, heavy, jagged piece of metal at him. The metal struck the hood of the patrol car and narrowly missed the deputy. The deputy saw that Aparicio held an object in his hand that appeared to be a knife.

Aparicio ignored the deputy’s commands to surrender and bladed his body and reached inside his clothing. When Aparicio threw a glass jar at the deputy, a Deputy Involved Shooting (DIS) occurred, during which the male was struck by gunfire. Despite his injury, Aparicio refused to surrender and walked east on Rosecrans Avenue toward Garfield Avenue. Assisting deputies responded and utilized less lethal weapons, including a Taser, in order to subdue Aparicio.

Hermes Aparicio was treated for a single gunshot wound to the leg by Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics and transported to a local hospital, where he was medically cleared for booking.

No deputies or other civilians were injured during the incident.
