A man faces charges of attempted murder after a South Carolina sheriff's deputy was injured in a shooting early Monday morning while on patrol near a construction site, authorities said.

Oscar Rene Martinez Munoz, 48, of Greenville is accused of shooting the Greenville County sheriff's deputy in the leg, according to arrest warrants issued Monday. Munoz is also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The sheriff's office said several deputies were on foot patrol in Greenville just before 1 a.m. when they encountered a suspicious vehicle.

A shooting took place, with at least one deputy firing at Munoz, authorities said. Munoz, who was not hit by gunfire, has since been detained.

The deputies were patrolling in the area after multiple construction site thefts were reported, Sheriff Hobart Lewis told WHNS-TV. The wounded deputy is expected to recover.
