New York Attorney General Letitia James released graphic videos Thursday showing the fatal police shooting of a Syracuse woman who attempted to set a house on fire in October.

The series of three videos from police-worn body cameras show two hours of a police standoff with Allison Lakie, 33, at her family home on Ulster Street in Syracuse.

Until now, Syracuse police and investigators at the attorney general’s office had declined to provide any detailed information about what led to the fatal shooting.

James said Thursday that her office decided to release the videos as part of her directive to increase transparency and strengthen public trust when investigating police-involved shootings.

The attorney general said the release of the video is not an expression of any opinion in the Syracuse shooting, which is still under investigation by her office.

Police responded to the house at 1:38 a.m. Oct. 20 to reports of a woman brandishing an eight-inch knife. An ambulance crew responding to a call at the home had called police for help.

The video shows police and a crisis response officer trying to negotiate with Lakie to come out of the house so that firefighters could safely put out a fire in the kitchen. Police said in October that Lakie started the fire.

One 18-minute video shows an officer from the Syracuse police crisis response team talking to Lakie from outside of the house for about 10 minutes.

“Nobody here wants to hurt you,” the officer said early in the crisis.

Lakie refused to come outside and told police to leave.

Police told her they couldn’t leave because she was bleeding, and the fire was too big for them to go away.

The crisis escalated when the fire began to spread in the kitchen.

Police entered the house through the back of the home and a firefighter used an extinguisher to put out the flames.

One video shows that prior to the shooting, Syracuse police officers told Lakie at least a dozen times to drop a knife inside the kitchen as the fire burned.

The video shows officers fired Tasers to try to subdue Lakie at least three times. The officers shouted, “Taser, Taser, Taser,” before firing.

As the kitchen filled with smoke, officers shouted they were out of Tasers as Lakie remained on the kitchen floor. Lakie then suddenly stood up and tried to walk through the kitchen entrance. Her legs and feet can be seen on the video as an officer shouts, “Allison, don’t!”

Seconds later, police fired multiple gunshots. As many as 10 shots can be heard on the video as Lakie falls to the floor.

The four officers who fired the shots were identified as Lt. David Hart, Sgt. Matthew Liadka, Officer Kenneth Sheehan and Officer Nicolas Saralegui-Martin. All four officers were placed on paid administrative leave under a department policy.

Police immediately called for emergency medical services and began CPR on Lakie.

Lakie was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:01 a.m., according to authorities.

The attorney general took over the investigation into the shooting from local law enforcement under a state law empowering the office to investigate any police-involved shooting death.

Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said he had no comment about the videos, but he is keeping all of the individuals involved in his prayers.

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, questioned after being sworn into his second term Thursday night, said he had seen the videos.

“Unfortunately, I’ve had to watch a number of videos like that,” Walsh said. “And it’s, it’s always really difficult and painful.”

Walsh said he believes the case is being handled appropriately.

“I’m confident in the way that the police department has handled it, and I’m confident that the Attorney General will do a thorough investigation and I’m looking forward to its completion.”
