Police say no one was struck by the gunfire when an officer discharged his duty weapon at an armed suspect early Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred just after midnight in the 9100 block of Kindlewood Drive.

According to HPD, officers responded to a call about a disturbance with a weapon.

Police said when they arrived, they were met by a witness who stated that her friend was being held inside the residence by her husband, later identified as Basel Khaled Al Rifai, 22, who was armed with a gun.

When officers went to the front door, police say Rifai opened the door with a rifle in his hand.

The officers said Al Rifai pointed the rifle in the direction of the officers.

Fearing for his and his fellow officers' lives, Officer Martinez, who is assigned to the Westside Patrol Division, and has been a sworn officer since March 2019, fired his weapon in the direction of Al Rifai.

Officers said Al Rifai, who was not struck, later dropped his weapon and surrendered. He was taken into custody without further incident and charged.

According to police, Al Rifai is charged with assault-family member and terroristic threat.
