Sevastopol is the biggest city in Crimea and port on the Black Sea. Since the referendum in 2014, Sevastopol has been administered as a federal city of the Russian Federation as it was from 1993-1997(1997-2014 was leased from Ukraine). Ukraine and most other countries do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia The city has mostly a Russian population, with a minority of Ukrainians.
It has been 7 years since there was a controversial referendum in the peninsula of Crimea where the local population voted to break away from Ukraine and join Russia. The west has called the Referendum a shame and not recognized that Crimea is part of Russia by claiming it was an annexation. The referendum was held on the 16th of March 2014 following the unrest in Kyiv and the removal of the Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. On the 17th after the results were counted the Supreme Council of Crimea declared the formal independence of the Republic of Crimea. Just a day Later on the 18th of March Treaty on Accession of the Republic of Crimea to Russia was signed between representatives of the Republic of Crimea and the Russian Federation to lay out terms for the immediate admission of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol as federal subjects of Russia and part of the Russian Federation. Keep in mind that Crimea was only given to Ukraine in 1954 and most of the population is Russian. We are in Crimean to see what has happened in the last 7 years and what the local population has to say about Russia, Ukraine, and Crimea. 18 Match We documented the celebration in Sevastopol and spoke with the locals about what they thought about the change.
