10 Gripen Facts – Beautiful But Deadly Fighter Jets

Since then the Gripen has overcome the turbulent stages of development and the negative press reviews it received in the early stages of its launch to become one of the most sought-after multirole fighter jets in modern warfare. Several countries currently operate the Gripen, while several other countries have ordered Gripen fighters. Currently, of the 271 units built, here are 10 advantages of the JAS 39 Gripen that make it one of the beautiful but deadly fighter aircraft.

1. Air-to-Air Strike Skills

Modern warfare often progresses from ground combat to frightful air-to-air combat. The JAS Gripen is well suited for this role due to its lightning speed, excellent air agility and large weapon payload capacity.

The Gripen is built with the capability to fire one of the most powerful, modern and widely deployed air-to-air missiles, the AIM-120 AMRAAM.

2. Surface Air Strike

The Gripen is a multirole fighter jet, hence having the ability to launch air-to-ground attacks is one of its key skills. With this capability, Gripen is able to perform close air support for friendly troops on the ground against various hostile targets such as armored tanks, mobile troops and the like by neutralizing them.

It does this by using long-range visual equipment and radar to pinpoint the location of enemy targets while launching precision-guided air-to-ground missiles such as the AGM-65 Maverick.

3. Air Refueling

Air refueling is a cool feature that involves transferring aviation fuel from military aircraft to fighter jets. The JAS 39 Gripen's air-fill method uses a probe-and-drogue system. This involves interlocking in the air the retractable probe of the Gripen with a long mouth like the funnel of a refueling plane.

With mid-air refueling, the Gripen can take off with less fuel and increase payload. While in the air, the jet can then be adequately charged for its assigned mission. Also, this system gives the Gripen a longer runtime.

Can Operate From Snowy Platform

Fighter jets can be called into flight at any time for a number of reasons – when enemy warplanes infiltrate, repel enemy encroachments on land, destroy enemy ships, or force trespassing aircraft to land.

This dire scenario requires a fast and timely response. However, due to time and weather factors, snow-covered runways can suddenly impede aircraft operations prior to launch. The Gripen multirole fighter jet will not be compromised as it can take off effectively even on snow-covered runways due to its short takeoff capability.
