Albuquerque state rep Georgene Louis arrested for DWI

An Albuquerque-based state representative, Georgene Louis, has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and several other driving-related charges. According to Santa Fe County Jail records, Louis was booked at 5:46 a.m. Monday on charges of aggravated DWI, violating speed limits, and charged related to evidence of car registration and not having insurance.Show more

Santa Fe Police confirmed its officers made the arrest Monday morning, however other details about what led up to the arrest have yet to be released. As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, court filings related to the case were not available, and the Santa Fe Police had not fulfilled KRQE News 13’s public records request for documents related to the case.

According to arrest records from the Santa Fe County Detention Center, Louis, 44, was booked on a no-bond hold early Monday morning. Louis, a Democrat, is a five-term state representative, representing parts of Albuquerque’s westside, officially known as District 26. That district covers areas along Central Avenue, west of 98th Street, and along Unser north to Ladera Drive.

Louis acknowledged the arrest and apologized in a written statement Monday evening.

“I am sorry and I deeply regret my lapse in judgment. I know I let so many people down. I am accepting responsibility for my mistake. I am prioritizing my health, and I will work hard to regain the trust of my constituents, my community and my family.”

Louis chairs the House Government, Elections, and Indian Affairs committee. She’s also a standing member of two other House committees, including the House Judiciary and House Rules & Order of Business committees.

In response to Louis’ arrest, lawmakers canceled a scheduled meeting of the committee Louis chairs on Monday morning. Several itemss were expected to be discussed during that committee hearing, including talks on the Early Childhood Education Department’s budget and Senate Bill 14 on enacting a clean fuel standard for the state. Lawmakers in Santa Fe are expected to wrap up the 2022 regular legislative session on Thursday.

Leadership for New Mexico House Democrats released a joint statement about Louis’ arrest Monday afternoon, stating, in part “We are aware of this developing situation and it is important that we let the judicial process take its course.”

Meanwhile, New Mexico’s Republican Party Chairman Steve Pearce called for Louis’ resignation Monday. In a written statement, Pearce stated, in part, “She faces criminal charges, and this kind of behavior does not coincide with that of a responsible public servant.”

“Rep. Louis should do the right thing and resign from her House seat. She faces criminal charges, and this kind of behavior does not coincide with that of a responsible public servant. Rep. Louis has violated the public trust, let down her constituents and endangered the lives of innocents. New Mexico deserves better. Aggravated drunken driving is a serious offense, and Rep. Louis must step down.”

Two other high-profile New Mexico lawmakers have been ensnared in DWI cases over the last several years. A once-rising star in the state’s Republican Party representing parts of Albuquerque’s westside, former house rep Monica Youngblood was arrested on a DWI charge in May 2018. A judge convicted Youngblood in the case in September 2018, sentencing her in October 2018 to one-day in jail and probation. The three-term state representative lost her bid for re-election months later in November 2018.

In July 2019, now former New Mexico state Senator Richard Martinez was arrested on a DWI charge following a car crash in Española. A five-term senator representing much of northern New Mexico, Martinez once chaired the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee and co-chaired the Courts, Corrections & Justice Interim Committee. A judge found Martinez guilty in December 2019, sentencing him to five days in jail. Martinez ran to retain his position as a state senator but was defeated by a challenger in the 2020 Democratic primary.
