A man who was shot to death by Riverside County sheriff's deputies earlier this month was identified Tuesday as a 51-year-old Corona resident.

Matthew Elston was fatally shot Jan. 2 after he allegedly tried to break into a Wildomar home while armed with a rifle.

Deputies were dispatched about 1:25 p.m. to the home in the 34600 block of Orange Street regarding a possibly suicidal man with a rifle trying to make contact with the occupant of the house, according to sheriff's Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro.

The occupant told sheriff's dispatchers that they feared for their life and could not safely leave the building, Pecoraro said.

"While multiple deputies were en-route to the location, they received information that shots had been fired by the suspect," she said. "They arrived on scene and located the suspect on the property, in possession of a rifle. At that time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred."

Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures on the wounded man and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department paramedics tried to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Pecoraro said.

Neither the home's occupant nor deputies were injured, Pecoraro said.
