The Lubbock Police Department released dashcam video Friday of an incident where a driver with mechanical malfunctions in his car called for help.

According to the LPD, last week, Nikolas Merritt-Voels, 18, called 9-1-1 and said his brakes were not working and accelerator was malfunctioning as he was traveling at a high rate of speed on Loop 289.

Officers responded and were able to find the Toyota Camry. One officer moved in front of the Camry to warn traffic ahead and attempt to contain the car.

While traveling westbound on North Loop 289, the Camry collided into the back of the patrol vehicle and lost control. The Camry drove through the north median, onto the access road, where the vehicle rolled and came to rest in a field.

Merritt-Voels had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center. The officer was not injured in the collision.

Officers responded in several different ways, including blocking traffic from entering the loop as the car traveled nearby and alerting traffic to the situation by using sirens and lights to clear the road in front of the car.

"That's exactly what our officer was doing when traffic became too congested and other drivers didn't yield the right of way, and he made the decision to allow the Camry to collide with his police car to attempt to stop it. This decision, one that should not be taken lightly, is just one example of the brave decisions our Lubbock Police Officers make every day in order to keep the public safe,' the release said.

The department’s Major Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
