Fatal deputy-involved shooting in Sgt. Bluff was justified

The Woodbury County Attorney says a deputy-involved shooting in Sergeant Bluff, where a suspect was fatally shot, was justified.

The county attorney, Patrick Jennings, made the announcement Wednesday morning during a news conference. Also at the news conference was Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan, who said the department’s own internal investigation found zero policy violations during the incident.

Officials have previously reported that Michael Meredith, 35, was shot after he struck a Woodbury County deputy with a tire iron, after allegedly trying to break into a trailer at Woodford Mobile Home Park.

The authorities say a deputy used a taser on him after the first shot was fired, but it did not slow him down. Another deputy then shot Meredith. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
