Durham police chopper Air1 spots a large gathering of cars driving recklessly
Durham police busted up a gathering of numerous cars doing donuts in Pickering, after their helicopter Air1 spotted hundreds of people and dozens of cars blocking an intersection and taking turns doing donuts in the road.
Police received multiple complaints from residents and business owners around midnight February 12, alerting them to a large gathering of vehicles at Clements Road and Squires Beach Road.
Air1 was alerted and flew to the scene. The chopper recorded several hundred people completely blocking the intersection as they surround vehicles doing donuts in the road. Some stood in the centre of cars’ circles, feet away from passing vehicles.
People in the cars are seen hanging out the windows and sunroofs to record the event. Some on the ground climbed street light posts to get an angle for their recordings.
When West Division officers responded to the scene, the cars scattered at a high rate of speed away from the intersection. Officers did not engage in pursuit out of concerns for public safety.
However, Air1 followed from above and saw several cars speed away. A white BMW was clocked heading westbound down Highway 401 at over 200 km/h.
Most of cars at the scene had their licence plates removed to avoid identification. Police are asking the public for any dashcam or security footage of the reckless driving to come forward.
“Durham Regional Police would like to remind the public of the increased penalties for the existing stunt driving legislation, which now includes the same enforcement capabilities on private property that it does on a roadway.” said Sgt Stacey Benson of the Traffic Services Branch “If you are charged with stunt driving, your licence will be immediately suspended for 30 days as well as your vehicle impounded for 14 days.
If convicted, you will face a fine of between $2,000 – $10,000, possible jail time, six demerit points as well as a one-year licence suspension,” she continued, “Our police service supports Durham Vision Zero’s roadway safety initiatives and therefore will continue to actively enforce incidents of dangerous and erratic driving”
