The Carson City Sheriff's Office on Monday released body camera footage and additional details about last week's police shooting of a 21-year-old man suspected of stealing catalytic converters while armed with a blowtorch, machete and hatchet.

According to a press statement from CCSO, deputies were dispatched at 4:33 a.m. Feb. 22 to the intersection of Adaline and North Curry streets and tried for over two hours to negotiate with the suspect, Luis Angel Santana.

Deputies then fired several non-lethal rounds of pepper balls, bean bags and 40-millimeter impact projectiles at Santana.

"These attempts were ineffective in subduing the suspect," according to CCSO.

Santana fled on foot and approached a 66-year-old nearby homeowner while holding the machete, which measured 23 inches in length and had an 18-inch blade, "in an upright position in a threatening and aggressive manner," according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy Jonathan Tripp then fired three times, striking Santana twice "in the lower extremity," from more than 20 yards away with his department-issued AM-15 .223 caliber rifle.

A 25-second clip from Tripp's body camera released Monday shows the moments leading up the shooting.

Santana was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he remains in stable condition as of Monday, according to CCSO.

Due to his injuries, he has not yet been formally booked in the Carson City Jail. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon against an elderly person, obstructing a police officer and third- and fourth-degree arson.

Tripp was placed on paid leave, pending investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Nevada State Police.

According to Monday's statement, Tripp is a 12-year law enforcement veteran who joined CCSO in March 2021.
