SETUP:

Sort the cards to their respective decks. Shuffle each of the 8 decks. Set the adversary deck, with the Skull, aside, as it will not be used in your first game. Give each player a board. Deal each player 2 cards from each of the three Character decks. Each player looks at their 6 cards and places one bronze Origin card faceup in the left spot on their board; 1 silver Motivation card faceup in the center; and 1 gold Destiny card face down on the right. At any point in the game you may look at your own face down destiny card. The remaining 3 tree cards are removed from play.

In the center of the table, place the 3 story decks on the table, leaving plenty of room beside them. Place the hero deck and anti-hero deck face down on the table. Place the rune stones within reach of all the players, sorting them based on their colors.

Deal 1 hero card to each player. Players look at their card but keep it hidden from their opponents. Give each player 3 experience tokens. Each player places a hero marker on the 3rd space down of the corruption tracker. The player who most recently finished reading a novel goes first.

Once everyone is ready to begin, draw 4 cards from the Act I deck and place them face-up on the table, adding a fifth card if playing a 4-player game. If you reveal any ally cards, the first player places them underneath any faceup challenge card so the top of the card is visible. You may only have 1 ally per challenge and if there are no more available challenge cards, discard the ally to the box. Fill any empty spaces in the row with new cards from the act 1 deck.
