The objective of the game is to win the most points and to play all of the cards in the Nerts pile. Setup. Give each player a standard 52 card deck of playing cards each with a unique design on its back. Each player shuffles their deck then flips the top 4 cards faceup in a row call their work piles. Next, each player deals 13 cards to a facedown pile called their nerts pile, which is placed to the right of their work piles. Flip the top card of the nerts pile over and place it on top of the pile. The remainder of the deck becomes is held face down in one hand as their individual stock.
When everyone is ready someone says go. All play happens simultaneously. You are allowed to do any legal move, any number of times, so long as you only do 1 move at a time. The way you move cards is identical to solitaire. You can stacking cards in your work area in decreasing order and alternating colors. You can only move the lowest rank card in each pile. You can also flip over 3 cards from your stock and play the topmost one. For a refresher of the rules of solitaire, check out this video.
When playing and moving cards, you may use your nerts pile as you desire. Whenever you move a card from it, flip the next card faceup. Unlike in solitaire, there is a community area in between all the players where the foundation piles play. The foundations begin with ace and go to king and any player can contribute to any pile. Once a pile reaches king, the player who played the king turns the pile face down and no more cards may be played on it.
When someone plays all the cards in their Nerts pile they shout “Nerts!” and play ends immediately. Gather up all the cards from the center community area and sort them based on their unique backs. Each player scores 1 point for each card they have in the center. Players also lose 2 points for each card still remaining in their nerts pile. Tally up the scores then gather up the cards and play again.
The first player to reach 150 points, wins.
