For 40 years, civil asset forfeiture has been used in questionable, dubious ways against law-abiding Americans citizens. Civil asset forfeiture is a major revenue source for many local police agencies. The average civil asset forfeiture is $1,000 or less. It costs a minimum of $2,000-$3,000 to hire an attorney to reclaim assets lost in a civil forfeiture often making it not even worth pursuing.
